Installed fluxbox, cant get it to start

i installed it, went through all the steps, but when i type startx i get this message,

"[root@Ecstasy fluxbox-1.0.0]# startx

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again."

im so lost how to get it to work, help!

Are you in a graphics mode when you type startx? That only works from a text terminal.

One way to get there is to type Ctrl-Alt-F1, log in as root, then type init 3

After that you should be able to use startx

By the way - if you haven't created a normal user - you should. The root login should be used for system administrative functions only. This is to prevent account hijacking by malicious software.
