PowerMac G4 Quicksilver freezes during install

Postby mfresh » 11 Mar 2009, 12:19

Hi there.

I have a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver, which works fine with OS X, and am trying to install YDL 6.1 from DVD

However, when I boot the G4 into the DVD, the installation starts for about 10 seconds, then freeezes at a different point each time. Sometimes the machine simply freezes, but once I got a message just after Anaconda started that said:

kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt
Oops: Exception in kernel mode, sig 4

plus a whole screenful of further stuff.

I know the G4 is working OK running OS X, and have checked the RAM for faults, but is also working fine. I can also sucessfully mount the DVD in OS X and browse its contents.

Anyone got any idea why the machine keeps freezing when the DVD tries to install?

Thanks!

Sounds like a bad image to me. Do a sha checksum verification on the downloaded image. http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/ you will see a howto here.

Thanks for the suggestion but it is not a bad image. The guys at Yellow Dog think that it must be a hardware fault in the chip itself.
