Installing VLC SOS-Please help

Postby Master » 19 May 2009, 23:00

I am trying to set up VLC to enable video playback. I have followed all instructions available online but I am seeing a recurring error regarding the repomd file in the extras repository. It cannot be opend/read.

[root@localhost Master]# yum install *gstreamer* totem totem-plugin
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
livna-stable 100% |=========================| 2.1 kB 00:00
Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: extra

This error also happened when trying to rum yum install for vlc

I looked at at the repomd.xml file and was concerned there was no header, can I disable this file or what can be done.

To start troubleshooting, first - what does your /etc/yum.repos.d/yellowdog-extras.repo file look like? It should look something like this:
Code: Select all
[extras]
name=Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 Extras
mirrorlist=http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/yd61-extras-mlist
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

I have been trouble shooting

The only thing I found that was remotely close to being an answer, was that it wasn't linking because I do not have a ydl.net account, do you know anything about this.

I know you have - but I'm just starting. :D That's why I'm asking you to do something trivial to begin - just didn't want you to think I was wasting your time.

Yup. Here's the deal. During the install, it will ask you if you have a YDL.Net account. This is a subscription based service that gets you priority service, custom servers, etc. If you say you have a YDL.net account, but you actually don't, this will write out incorrect repo files.

NOTE: You don't need a YDL.net account to use the YDL repositories. Again - it's a custom account. You get the same software regardless if you have a YDL.net account or not.

So - again - the file I posted should match the contents on your PS3. If it doesn't, you will have to edit it so that it does. You will also have to edit the yellowdog-base.repo and yellowdog-updates.repo files as well. The full list of default YDL files are here:

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3017#p11364

These are what you're looking for:

yellowdog-base.repo
Code: Select all
[base]
name=Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 Base
mirrorlist=http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/yd61-base-mlist
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

yellowdog-extras.repo
Code: Select all
[extras]
name=Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 Extras
mirrorlist=http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/yd61-extras-mlist
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

yellowdog-updates.repo
Code: Select all
[updates]
name=Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 Updates
mirrorlist=http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/resources/yd61-updates-mlist
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

Also - please don't forget: If you add third party repositories like livna, you should also install yum-protectbase, or bad things can happen.

Full instructions are here:

Cheers,
Paul

P.S. I cut'n'pasted the wrong repo in my previous post. I've fixed that now. Sorry. :)
