So far, things have all set up just fine on this ydl 6.1, today i was tinkering about with this ps3vram, so it didnt feel like i needed it, but im all up for a performance boost, googling the error message let me here : viewtopic.php?f=19&t=4842&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

basically, i would like to retain the time ive put into this so far :p but mine is the newer model 80gb, does that mean ps3vram is completely off the table?

is it possible to updae to 6.2 to solve the problem, or is a reformat and 6.2 install in order to enable this popular enhancement? :(

If you have the newer model 80 Gb machine, then 6.2 is the only way for you to use ps3vram.

For reference, the Fixstars advisory is here:
http://us.fixstars.com/support/advisories.shtml

Look for the section labeled Boot Issue with the 80GB and 160GB PS3 Running YDL 6.1. This lists the affected models.

I don't think you need to reformat. The 6.2 upgrade should be fine. Do be aware that 6.2 has some issues with Bluetooth - i.e. it doesn't work. :( billb has contributed a home-built kernel that solves the issue. See here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=6500

NOTE: There may be a library conflict with it. Most likely this issue won't affect you. In that thread, the discussion begins here:

i had a look, and my model number is CECHL04, this doesnt match either of those on the site, would that suggest i can use the 6.1 that allows vram?

if that is the case, is it possible to reinstall, without reformatting?

That's not the model number they're talking about. That's the "other" model number. We never did quite make a 1-to-1 correspondence between the two numbers.

80 GB PS3 (model number 98015) and the 160GB PS3 (model number 900006).

The closest we could get is listed here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=5237&p=29386&hilit=900006#p29386

So - from this post we can see that any CECHLxx is affected. This includes yours. So - no - you can't use 6.1 vram.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for clearing that up matey, ive messed around with my 6.1 a great deal, i cant see a simple update working, is it possible to do a fresh install without reformatting, ie, just clearing off the already set linux partition and putting 6.2 in there?

Yes - you can do a fresh install.

BTW - there's a difference between reformatting the GameOS and reformatting Linux.

To do a clean install of YDL 6.2, you do not need to reformat the GameOS from the XMB. Just do a Linux reformat during the 6.2 installer. Unless you're trying to remove the Linux partition and restore space to the GameOS partition - you never need to reformat the GameOS.

But - the update works pretty well too. There's instructions here:
http://us.fixstars.com/support/solution ... _6_2.shtml
