Postby nickmon » 07 Sep 2009, 14:02

I sorry if asked before (i did have a look round but could not find or missed what I was looking for)

I have a working 6.0 (latest patches) install

Should I upgrade to 6.1 then 6.2 or go straight to 6.2 ?

Thanks

Normally, we'd tell you to go straight to 6.2, but there's one technical issue you need to consider.

If you're using a PS3 - possibly on Mac too, but I need confirmation of this - 6.2 is missing the Bluetooth module in the kernel. If you're using Bluetooth peripherals, they won't work after you upgrade to 6.2. Our own billb has created a replacement kernel that returns Bluetooth functionality - but if you don't feel comfortable installing a new kernel via RPM, this might be a deal breaker for you. Well, at least until YDL issues a patch. :D

6.1 is nice - I upgraded my 6.0 to 6.1 and have enjoyed the upgrade. I haven't done 6.2 yet - I just haven't had time to free enough space on this hard disc - but I will at some point. (I don't have Bluetooth devices, so that's not a dealbreaker for me.)

With 6.1 & 6.2 you get a kernel that allows you to use part of your PS3's video RAM as a swap drive. This increases the performance of your system under heavy load. Also - 6.2 has newer versions of Open Office, Firefox, etc.

So - I'd say - probably worth it to upgrade to 6.1. If the Bluetooth isn't an issue - either you have no Bluetooth devices, or you're comfortable with RPM kernel upgrades - then go directly to 6.2

BTW - Has anyone tried the direct 6.0 to 6.2 upgrade yet?

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the reply and the points.

I dont have any Bluetooth devices i use on the Linux side of the PS3 so I should be OK.

Think I might just go 6.1 then 6.2 after at a point in the future.
