Postby eloquent » 09 Jan 2010, 17:55

Hiho

i burned the normal ISO version of YDL 6.2 on my dvd, started up my ps3 and bootet the dvd... when it comes to kboot i typed in install_ps3_1080p and pressed return... Then the solution switches fine to 1080p but then it stucks at running install.... running /sbin/loader ... these are the last two lines i get... then i have to reboot the ps3 or press ctrl + alt + del ... Any Ideas?

There's a couple of things we normally check before we start troubleshooting.

First - have you SHA1SUM verified the ISO you downloaded? The SHA1SUM is a unique checksum value that can be calculated for a file - like an ISO. In the directory where you downloaded the ISO, there should be a text file called SHA1SUM that contains the checksum for your file. If the SHA1SUM value listed matches the one you calculate from the ISO you downloaded, then you have a good download.

Here's the list of SHA1SUM values:
http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM

A quick HOWTO is here:
http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM-HOWTO

Next - do you have any extra USB devices attached? Like a thumb drive, or external harddrive? You'll want to remove them before starting the installation.

Finally - although you probably did this, did you partition the hard drive from the GameOS to either give 10 Gig to OtherOS or 10 Gig to GameOS? Also - from the GameOS, did you install the boot firmware using the Install OtherOS command? You need to do both of these steps from the XMB before you start the Linux install. DON'T FORGET - repartitioning the PS3's hard disc from the GameOS is destructive - you will erase all of your saved game data. You'll want to do a system backup before you do any kind of partitioning/formatting from the XMB.

Cheers,
Paul

I have the same issue, however I am trying to install over an exhisting older ubuntu version on the ps3 without formating since I will loose game data that can not be saved (NFS Undercover). Do I have to format through the game menu?

You shouldn't have to do that -- no.

Have you:

Checked the sha1sum on the iso you used to burn the DVD? (see README post)

Tried burning the install DVD with imgburn (http://www.imgburn.com) with Verify after writing turned on?

Tried burning the install DVD at a low speed (like 1x, 2.4x)?

Thanks for the response something was wrong with the image originally burned with IMGburn. I just made a new copy w/ roxio and got a little further now the error reads:
IOError: Input/output error: '/dev/tty3'
install exited abnormally [1/1]

after that it exits gracefully unlike before and asks to safely reboot.

It also mentions a couple of files in the usr/bin and Lib prior to reporting the error.

Thanks again for the help

:?: I was asking if you used the sha1sum tool to confirm that the .iso file you downloaded was not corrupt. See this post:

So you got this result?

And then...

Yup just burned another copy w/ verify 3.6x and IMGburn same thing stops before installation menu. Waiting for new download to complete them will burn new one at 2x and verify. Its the us Oregon download if that matters.

No issue starting the old ubuntu install 8.01

Thanks

Am I missing something here? I still don't think you've answered billb's question about the SHA1SUM verify. Doing a verify on burn is not the same as doing the SHA1SUM verify.

If you have done it, we really need you to say the following:
"I ran SHA1SUM on my downloaded ISO, and the resultant value matches the entry in the FTP server's SHA1SUM file"

Until you say this, we really can't help you. Seriously.

There's a quick howto on SHA1SUM here:
http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM-HOWTO

Basically, you'll need to download a small command line program, and run it against the ISO you downloaded. There's a list of values here - it should match one of them:
http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM

Paul thanks I did as you recommended with the following results:
I ran SHA1SUM on my downloaded ISO, and the resultant value matches the entry in the FTP server's SHA1SUM file. The command line was identical to
85e7cbb2f5a158c6e00f9e0cd253e77d3a9a6a85 yellowdog-6.2-ppc-DVD_20090629.iso

I also downloaded a different ISO image checked it and then burned it with IMGburn with verify at 1X. same problem still ... running /sbin/loader.
I am starting to think that the old ubuntu version is doing something maybe freespace or kernel mismatch???

Thanks

Did you install the bootloader from the YDL 6.2 install DVD? (in XMB, the Install OtherOS option)

Yes I did. Then switched to other OS and rebooted the two penguins menu with a bunch of checks then at the kboot choose the 720p PS3 option (actually tried the 1080i and just enter as well). The systems performs a few checks the screen blinks and then it just stops at ... running /sbin/loader... instead of starting the install menu.

OK, assuming the install DVD is OK (sha1sum checked on .iso, DVD burned with no errors reported on verify), YDL 6.2 bootloader installed ...

Some users have reported problems using certain keyboards (see this topic). What keyboard are you using? Also, be sure to unplug any other USB devices/hubs besides a mouse.
