Do you have any extra USB devices attached? Like a thumb drive, or external harddrive? You'll want to remove them before starting the installation.

Got same problem... 
I have a PS3 w/ 300GB HDD.
I'm currently using my Logitech G9x mouse and G15 keyboard.
So far i know that if you have a USB hub plugged into PlaySataion - you won't get further than "running sbin/loader"(and my G15 has a built-in hub).
0.5 gallons of coffee and my secret dark magic ritual helped me to reach the actual installation screen, but then it stuck almost at the end of installation.
I just unplugged the keyboard right after choosing boot method ad i used it only to enter the root password.
