The very first thing you should do is run a SHA1SUM against the YDL 6.2 ISO you downloaded.

SHA1SUM is a checksum utility that generates a unique number for every file. If your download was incomplete, running SHA1SUM on that file would generate a number that doesn't match the number generated from a completely and correctly downloaded file.

Normally, the FTP site where you download the ISO has a filed called SHA1SUM - this is a text file that contains names and SHA1SUM values you can compare.

Here's the file from http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM :

Code: Select all
f0862b7442e2f38bd01039ab6a6e28db84fe5ded  yellowdog-6.0-DVD_20080207.iso
f5348c8661eb1b3272cbd71a1e2ec6c189c4587d  yellowdog-6.0-DVD_POWERSTATION_20080718.iso
259d78e210d5681116bc5fc0d38a1017890a4ca5  yellowdog-6.1-ppc-DVD_20081119.iso
c9ed7aba1191fef5fedd745ea21e7e308206ccfe  yellowdog-6.1-ppc-DVD_20090201_NEW_PS3.iso
85e7cbb2f5a158c6e00f9e0cd253e77d3a9a6a85  yellowdog-6.2-ppc-DVD_20090629.iso

This directory also has a quick guide:
http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM-HOWTO

If you're running a Mac, I think SHA1SUM is built in to the OS. You'll have to run the command manually from a terminal window, though.

Cheers,
Paul

Paul, I didn't download the iso, I bought a disc from YDL so when it gives me the error I'm thinking, is it my unit or what ?? I have gotten far enough to erase the former version of Tiger on the HD but now I have a partial version of YDL.

thanks Rick

Wow - a real YDL disc? They haven't sold those in quite a long time. How long have you been waiting to do this install? :D

Anyway - one other thing to check. According to the instructions:
http://www.ydl.net/support/installation ... _guide.pdf

3.At the white text on a black background boot prompt, press TAB for a full selection of install options, a few of which are detailed as follows:

●G4 -- Enter install_ppc32 or install_ppc32_text and press ENTER

●G5 -- Enter install_ppc64 or install_ppc64_text and press ENTER

●Text Installer -- Use the text options to use a nongraphical installer which uses the TAB, ARROW, and RETURN keys instead of a mouse. This is used with systems whose graphics cards or monitors are not readily supported or systems with less than 200MB RAM.

I can't quite tell - but the ppc64 suffix in the package above bothers me. Make sure you've selected install_ppc32 or install_ppc32_text for your G4.

Other than that, if you bought a disc from Fixstars, make sure it isn't damaged in any way. If it is damaged, you may want to download an ISO from a public mirror and burn your own.

The list of mirrors is here:
http://www.ydl.net/support/downloads/

Paul

Paul, The ppc64 made me suspicious also... so I downloaded an iso and burned my own DVD. I installed it OK but now I have the command line instead of a GUI. How do I go from the command line to the GUI ?? I'm getting closer... I think

Many thanks Rick

I found the Post Re: Need assistance with my 6.2 install but between steps 3 and 4 I don't see the line /etc/inittab so how do I find it to edit it ??
OK, I found it, installed the GUI, now the only problem is it doesn't pick up my cable internet connection. I'm working on it.

Bingo, it was a bad cable connection, My Yellowdog Mac Mini is Online !!!

Thanks Folks Rick
