Install on PS3 v4.0

If you have problems installing YDL, or need some information before you start.

Install on PS3 v4.0

Postby adfek » 04 Dec 2011, 17:00

It appears as thought Playstation removed the custom menu from the menu when formatting the PS3 HD.

How can I install yellowdog on the latest version? I tried following the instructions in the PDF but kept hitting brick walls. Please help.

Thanks,
adfek

There's no official method for installing OtherOS/Linux/YDL on FW > 3.15.

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html

Custom firmware exists that allows you to install Linux on your PS3, but I'm not familiar with it, can't discuss it here, and don't have any idea if it works when you've updated to 4.0.
PS3 60GB [CECHA01], FW 3.15, YDL 6.2, Samsung T260HD @ 1920x1200
Powermac G4 1.25 GHz x2, 2 GB RAM, YDL 6.2

As billb mentioned, Linux is no longer supported on the PS3.

To be clear: Linux was never supported on the PS3 "slim" console.

If you have an older PS3 "phat" console, then Linux is only supported with Firmware 3.15 and earlier. If you've upgraded beyond 3.15, then Linux is disabled.

Unfortunately, you can't downgrade PS3 firmware either. Once it's upgraded - that's it.

Legally, all we can suggest is that, if you're interested in running YDL on PS3, you should find a used PS3 "phat" console, with a firmware version of 3.15 or earlier.

Cheers,
Paul
