Installing a Game

Postby Kyuya » 11 Mar 2008, 07:05

I have been wondering, is it possible to install any of the windows 95/98 games onto yellow dog ( StarCraft, Diablo. ) onto this? If not would any of the old mac games work? ( Blades of Exile, Avernum ) Thank you for any support.

I had a long post that I think got deleted due to my own ineptitude. :)

The gist of it was - there may be some NAT issues as well as Firewall issues.

By way of explanation:

My PS3 is connected Wirelessly to an access point that's also a Firewall & router. When I set up Opera for torrenting, it didn't work at first. I opened up the PS3's firewall to the port Opera requested - but it still didn't work correctly.

Eventually, I figured out it was because the external bittorrent trackers could not reach my PS3 due to NAT (Network Address Translation) issues.

I had to go into my access point/router's settings, and set up NAT and Port Forwarding. D-Link - my AP/router manufacturer - calls this "Virtual Server".

What this does is map ports on the outward facing side of the AP/router to inner addresses. This also sets the AP/router's firewall as well.

So - as an example - I set the AP/router to always assign my PS3 the address 192.168.0.12 via DHCP. Then, I go into Virtual Server, and create a rule that maps Opera's BitTorrent port 18768 from the router's address of 64.236.29.120 to 192.168.0.12.

Viola! Instant Opera happiness!

What this does is send any port 18768 traffic that hits my router at address 63.236.29.120 to my PS3 on the wireless at 192.168.0.12. Opera reported no issues and I could torrent to my heart's content.

I'm thinking that Frostwire may need a similar setup.

Azureus avoids this by using UPnP to set my AP/router automatically. I don't know if Frostwire has UPnP capability. You may have to set it manually.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Paul

RealPlayer and HelixPlayer

Postby Yoshikazu Matsumoto » 25 Mar 2008, 18:16

RealPlayer-10.0.0.297-20040730.ppc.rpm
It is not possible to start though it is possible to install.

HelixPlayer-1.0.5.757-20050514.ppc.rpm
The installation and the start are possible.

realplay-10.0.5.756-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-powerpc.bin
It is possible to start though the installation is a little troublesome.
:?

(Test environment = PLAYSTATION3 + YDL6.0)

Were you able to get RealVideo to display videos? I don't have problems starting the players - Real or Helix - but I can't get video to show under YDL 5.0.2.

Re: RealPlayer and HelixPlayer - Need help with YDL

Hello there

I am new to Linux but I feel I am doing quite well so far... but I fear it may get complicated...

I want to play my old Southpark files... unfortunately (or not?) they are in Real Media format(s). The files are reasonabley old but before I realised (remembered/checked properties) what codec they used I have installed mplayer and that works fine for WMV files I could not play previously.

So I went to Real.com and thought it would be easy to get realplayer on YDL6.1 because there were "linux" versions available as RPM file.... how foolish.

I figued out I needed a PPC version (thanks to the formus) and managed to download and "install" RealPlayer-10.0.0.297-20040730.ppc.rpm but I can not start the player.

Is it possible to get the player working on YDL6.1 for PS3? Is there a guide available to walk me through this? Do I need to uninstall this player and start again using the bin install (I very much doubt I could do this without help if it is the answer?)

Great Forum... thanks a lot

Matt

No - we eventually gave up. The main issue is the lack of Xv (X Video) support in the framebuffer display of PS3 Linux.

The sad part is that the PS3's X Server advertises X Video support, but it's not actually there. :D

Hello
sorry about the delay I've been engrossed in operation flashpoint :D when I've had a chance to get on the ps3, after having a think about it I'm not sure you're going to be able to convert something mplayer can't play as the two converters I know of, ffmpeg and mencoder both use the same libs/codecs mplayer does, but you could always give it a try, here's about the most comprehensive tutorial for mencoder, http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/me ... codec.html with particular reference to libavcodec, which does claim to have and I quote
11.3.1. libavcodec's video codecs
rv10 RealVideo 1.0
rv20 RealVideo 2.0
so I'm not sure why your real video files won't play, have you tried downloading one file to your ps3 hard drive or a memory stick to see if it'll work directly ?
here's a very simple ffmpeg command (just for experimental purposes)
Code: Select all
ffmpeg -y -i ~/MotoGP2009round7-assen.mp4 -ab 128k -ac 2 -s 640x360 -vcodec mpeg4 -b 768k ~/avi.videos/assen2009.mp4
press q after a few seconds to check the result.
there's also a gui for ffmpeg in the repos called avidemux which doubles up as a player and editor.
the only other option I can think of is to try opening the file using firefox as the mplayerplug-in says it has real player
