Also, did you use the su command to become root? If so you may need to use su - instead so you'll share the path of the root user, too.

No, as described in the guide:

"switch to text mode using Ctrl-Alt-F1. Log in as root at the localhost login prompt.

root
<password>

The su command is used to change your effective user id while you're logged in under your regular user account. If you're logging in as root (just to test your video mode as described in the guide) you won't need to use that.

I am a total linux noob. I am using YDL 6.1. Just installed on ps3 without a problem. This video mode thing is not working. I login as root and when i type ps3-video-mode it says command not found. What am i doing wrong?

How are you logging in as root? After hitting Ctrl-Alt-F1? Or within a terminal window after typing su?
