Apple Multi-scan display and YDL

i've got an apple 17" multi-scan display. however every time it starts the GUI interphase the screen gives me a 'widescreen' format type look where a good 5" on the top and bottom are not regestering with Linux. If i try to change the resolution through KDE it will say restart however when you restart it hasn't changed anything. Anyone else have the problem and know how to fix it?

Seeing as nobody has answered yet and I had the same problem on my g3 266 all in one machine, i'll give ya my settings in hopes it'll help...

Apple multiple scan 15AV with ATI Mach64
Resolution:
1024x768
Color depth:
thousands of colors

Advanced:
horizontal refresh rate: 30.0-56.5
vertical refresh rate: 56.0-75.0
DPI 2365 by 2438 dots per inch

this gave me perfect display for 15".... I did notice that settings didn't change at resart but only because i wasn't changing the right thing, but finally i got it right. I never tried the graphical login, have you tried text mode?
