Upgrading my PS3 from YDL 5.0 to 6.0

Upgrading my PS3 from YDL 5.0 to 6.0

Postby RuthyWelch » 18 Dec 2008, 23:26

Hello all,

I installed 5.0 a month or so ago only to realize that it was already out of date! Silly me, now I have the time do this run through again, but had a few questions first:

Do I need to first uninstall 5.0 or will 6.0 overwrite it? If I need to uninstall it, how exactly is that done? There's a third issue and that's that the iso image will not mount and I can't seem to burn it. I use a mac with disk utility. It worked fine when I did this routine with 5.0, are you supposed to do something different with 6.0?

Have you checked the sha1sum on your .iso image to make sure it isn't corrupt?

For Mac, see here:
http://www.bresink.com/osx/sha1.html

And for YDL 6.0, it should be:
f0862b7442e2f38bd01039ab6a6e28db84fe5ded (yellowdog-6.0-DVD-20080207.iso)
PS3 60GB [CECHA01], FW 3.15, YDL 6.2, Samsung T260HD @ 1920x1200
Powermac G4 1.25 GHz x2, 2 GB RAM, YDL 6.2

Thanks for the help. I downloaded the iso again and tried mounting it. It wouldn't work. But I burned the image in toast and it worked fine! Ive got YDL 6.0 up and running. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Neither was setting up the wireless internet. Now my issue is mounting my western digital external hd. I've googled this issue and see that it's common but none of the tips seem to help. anyone help me out with this?

How is your external drive formatted (FAT32, NTFS, etc)?

No you know I'm a newbie when I find myself asking, how do I find out the formatting? It's hooked up to me Mac at the moment. Will it say under "Get Info?"

Should be OK, then ... usually I just plug in a USB drive and it's recognized / mounted.

Maybe we should look at the output of dmesg immediately after plugging in the drive ... ? Just open a terminal window, plug in the drive, then enter:

Code: Select all
dmesg | tail
