Can't get Wi-fi to work in YDL 6.0

If you are new to YDL and have some more or less basic questions.

Can't get Wi-fi to work in YDL 6.0

Postby slidrmann » 25 Dec 2008, 21:51

Hi guys,

I am new to Linux and decided to give it a shot on my PS3. But for some reason wifi doesn’t want to work. I have been browsing all threads in this forum related to wireless configuration in YDL 6.0 but still haven’t been successfully able to get it to work :( . Any help would be highly appreciated.

I am getting the same error message mentioned in thread --> viewtopic.php?t=2999 except that I am using 64 Bit WEP and not WPA or TKIP fancy stuff. I made sure I enter the WEP key correctly as ASCII characters in KEY field in wireless configuration and SSID is in correct case. It is set to obtain IP address automatically from DHCP. GameOS on my PS3 is version 2.53.

Activating wireless connection fails and not able to obtain IP address. On investigating further, I see the below error when I run iwconfig eth0:

“Warning: Driver for device eth0 has been complied with version 22 of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 20.
Some things may be broken”

I checked the wireless-tools RPM version that came with YDL 6.0 which is wireless-tools-28-2. Is there an upgrade that I need to perform to make it work? If not what am I missing? Please help!!

Hey Billb, right – I had looked at that thread. I have also tried deleting my existing connection and creating a new one as mentioned in link http://us.fixstars.com/support/solution ... nfig.shtml
When I test my newly created connection, it doesn’t activate. Triple checked my SSID and KEY parameters and looks correct.

When I try to activate the connection it fails with error “cannot activate network device eth0!” In the window it shows message “Determining IP information for eth0…failed.”

Here’s the output of ifconfig and iwconfig. Any clues in there? Thanks.

Guys finally got it to work. Looks like there was something going on with my wireless router. I reset it and started over again which fixed the issue. Wireless is working fine...am a happy camper!!

Thanks!

P.S: Those error messages in iwconfig about driver for eth0 being compiled with higher version than supported (found in my previous post) is definitely misleading though. Ended up "googling" in wrong direction. So I think its safe to advise other friends on this board who are troubleshooting Wifi issues that they can ignore this error for the most part. It isnt the root cause for your wireless setup issue.

so is the problem with the newer PS3 firmware and YDL wifi fixed yet?

per this the tech advisories (which ydl advises reading before installing for PS3):
http://us.fixstars.com/support/advisories.shtml

it looks like wifi is broken.

I've got the latest PS3 firmware (2.50 something). I was thinking of installing YDL 6.1 on a new drive I got (first time YDL user). This would be a roadblock, as my PS3 only has wifi access where its at, and I'm not moving it.

can anyone confirm if this is a problem anymore? Since the OP says he got it working, but I'm not sure what fw he was at....

I've tested wifi successfully on a new 80 GB PS3 running YDL 6.1, and also on my original 60 GB PS3 when I was running 6.0. In both cases, I was using 128-Bit WEP encryption. On 6.1 I tested on PS3 FW 2.53, and I'm not sure which firmware I tested with back on 6.0 -- I normally used "wired" networking on both.

This was fixed a long, long time ago, I think. WiFi works fine for me with the latest GameOS firmware.

Unless - this is talking about the issues with WiFi I'm seeing with 6.1 and the accompanying otheros.bld. This is manifest as an inability to re-create wlan0 if you delete it. (You can get around this by using the otheros.bld that's on the 6.0 disc.)

Cheers,
Paul
