Help with MP3s, YDL and PS3s

Postby hughc » 02 Jan 2009, 23:02

Hi,

Yellow Dog linux is installed on my Sony PS3. The DVD used for the install is from the image "yellowdog-6.1-ppc-DVD_20081119.iso". The install will not play a MP3. Desktop audio (*.wav) works.
The system believes the codecs are installed. Codelna shows gstreamer as installed.
The PS3's os is 2.53.
My questions-
Is yellowdog-6.1-ppc-DVD_20081119.iso correct for the PS3?
What needs to done to play mp3 files?

Thanks

You have downloaded the latest distro and can use Rhythmbox which works similar to iTunes that came with your installation. You can also install VLC to play mp3 files too.
80GB PS3 | FW 2.53 | 320GB HDD WD Scorpio Blue | YDL 6.1 GNOME

Thanks for the reply.
My solution was to update my repository listing - see post;

Next the gstreamer-ugly.rpm was installed using the add/remove software tool. Now the MP3 s play fine.
It took me two weeks to determine the add/remove software tool didn't have all the repositories.

BTW - this is by design for YDL and other RedHat-based Linuxes, which adhere strictly to the GPL licensing policy. MP3 is a copyrighted codec, and is not GPL compliant. We've been discussing this again lately - see here:
