Please excuse my ignorance, could anyone let me know which environment runs faster, E17 or GNOME?

gnome runs faster and is more stable. There are other alternatives listed in the forums that take a little more work (not much) to get going

What platform are you running? Mac? PS3? IBM Blade Server?

Some of the speed differences depend on the video hardware you're using.
