{solved} My memory stick is read only??

Postby Noons » 10 Jan 2009, 00:38

As the title says my memory stick is read only. I successfully wrote to it once, transfered the files to my PC to burn them but now I can't write to it any more??? what am I missing here?

Regards,
Greg

One thing that will cause this is if you created the files as root, but are now trying to access it as a normal user. Try access the stick under the root account.

In that case, take a look at the card and see if there's any kind of write-protect switch. SD cards have 'em.

Either that - or the PC has changed the user name and your normal account can't write to it.

Have you tried accessing the memory stick as root user as per my previous post?

I'm going with this one. I tried accessing it under the root account and it was still read only. formatting it from my PC may be the remedy then I guess?

If you can't access it as root, something else is up. Let me ask one more question. How is your memory stick formatted? If it's not FAT, that might be the reason.

I'm not sure on how to check that, like I said I did wrote to it once but after deleting the files and trying to do it again it fails. This is starting to get annoying :x My PC's SD slot isn't reading anything the light never goes off and the auto play doesn't come up... damn vista :x Is there a way to format this http://www.kingston.com/flash/securedigital.asp card from linux?

Are you using my ps3bodega repo? If so, you can easily install gparted (yum install gparted) and use that to format the memory card from Linux -- I'd make it FAT32, and use a volume label on it. And please be careful using gparted -- pay close attention to the documentation and any prompts.

OK I got gparted installed and then I select the correct drive choose format to fat32 it starts and then stop right away with the error that the drive is read only. I'm out of ideas here :(

It's SD right? I would really look for a read/write switch.

I got it formatted now and it successfully reads and writes what a pain in the a** that was either way thanks guys once again. one of these days i'll figure all this stuff out but for right now just... Doh!!

Good point, Paul -- just looked at the card Noons linked to earlier:

Secure — built-in write-protect switch prevents accidental data loss
