If it's a standard SDTV, it's most likely 480i.

You have to edit your /etc/yaboot.conf file with the new value. See here:

I have a sdtv and i can't see all of what i am suppose to see everything is chop of at the bottom

append="video=ps3fb:129 rhgb quiet
root=LABEL=/1"

no matter what i change 129 into i get the same thing.
Did i skip a step or anything?
can somebody show me step by step how to get rid of the black boarders?

What exactly are you having trouble with here? This is about as step-by-step as it gets:
viewtopic.php?t=3524

Just go down to the Edit your yaboot.conf file: section. You'll want to use mode 129 instead of the 131 in the example.

NOTE: Make sure you've switched to text mode with Ctrl-Alt-F1 and logged in as root as detailed earlier in that post.

ONE MORE NOTE: Because you installed 480i, you might have an incomplete /etc/yaboot.conf file. Specifically, your append section might have originally looked like this:

append="rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1"

In that case, you need to make it look something like this:

append="video=ps3fb:mode:129 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1"

It all has to be on one line - not split as you posted above.

BTW - I'm assuming your LABEL=/1, because that's what you posted above. If it's something else - leave it alone. If you change the LABEL= parameter - you might not be able to boot.

Why not - what exactly is happening?

i want to get rid of the black boarders that is cutting off stuff

Understood. We're trying to help you get there.

I was in text mode and then switch into graphic mode
i can't switch back to text mode because when i do it says fatal error

That is correct - ps3-video-mode is only used to test video modes - not to actually switch them. The only way to switch them is by editing /etc/yaboot.conf and rebooting.

i think my tv is NTSC not 480 but i don't knoe anything about it at all

NTSC is 480i.

You're always probably going to have issues with SDTVs. Even if you get it to full screen and solve your immediate problem - you'll most likely find that fullscreen is "too big". The screen will extend way past the edge of your set, due to a TV problem called "overscan".

So - generally - with an SDTV, the issue you run into is either black bands or too big.

Most of us use some kind of HDTV or computer monitor to get around this.

As for your editing, I tried setting my PS3 to 480i, switching to text mode with Ctrl-Alt-F1, logging in as root, and editing the yaboot.conf file with nano:

nano -w /etc/yaboot.conf

I had no problem editing this file, nor with putting the append="video=ps3fb:mode:129 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/1" all on one line.

Is this what you're doing? Where can I help you with this procedure?

I'm sorry, the way you phrase this leaves me wondering if there is another way around this. I haven't had much luck in my search.

Nope - sorry. As I mentioned above - most of us use some sort of HDTV or HDMI-compatible computer monitor for this very reason.

There is a tool called fbset that some folks use when you've set the buffer to fullscreen and the image extends past the edge of the screen. However - due to the small size of the SDTV picture, this probably won't help much.

You can read more about fbset here:
