Fixing Screen Resolution

If you are new to YDL and have some more or less basic questions.

Fixing Screen Resolution

Postby MasamuneSoul » 28 Mar 2009, 23:00

Hi, I have YDL 6.1 on my 80GB PS3 (newer model if that helps) and hooked up to a 24in flat screen SDTV. Problem is I dunno how to change the resolution to where you can actually use the OS without having to scroll around 95% of the time. (I know it won't be perfect like a Computer Monitor but you know.) The TV is an 480i, NTSC.

Windows exceeds the screen. Also a black-border. (Border doesn't bother me. It's just the size of open windows.) I read other threads and tuts but they don't make any sense to me. Can anyone help?

Any help is appreciated. :)

(PS: Is the S-Video cables worth getting? My TV has a jack in the back for it. Dunno if it will do anything, Linux-wise.)

If your TV is 480i only, you're stuck with it. But you CAN get rid of the border, by switching to fullscreen video mode 129. You do that by editing a line in /etc/yaboot.conf

The line will look like this:

Code: Select all
append="video=ps3fb:mode:1 rhgb quiet root=LABEL=/"

And you'll change that mode from 1 to 129.

You can also move windows around by holding down the Alt key and left click dragging with the mouse. I know the travails of LInux on NTSC because I used to run a PS2 Linux kit on SDTV, 640x448. S-video will make things a touch clearer and easier to read but won't affect resolution at all.

Dang. That's stupid, IMO.

Figured S-video wasn't worth it. I have component jacks. Is it worth getting? (Even if it's not gonna help-out Linux-wise.)

Component or composite? Composite - no. Component - yes - especially if you can turn up your resolution. I'm basically running my PS3 at 720p via the component out. (Translating thru a component to VGA transcoder)

What's the max your set can do? I know you say it's 480i, but if it has component jacks, it should at least do 480p, right? That couldn't hurt. :)

The only thing I know it can do is 480i. I have Composite, component, and s-video on my TV. I never tested component nor s-video. I don't know if it can do 480p since Wal-mart actually gave me the wrong remote and owner's manual 2 years ago.

It's a Sanyo 24in silver flat screen TV. Here is what it is:

(I bought it when it was $150.00)

480p? Would it help out the resolution?

It should be able to do 480p since you have component. That's the main reason they used to put those jacks on TVs.

Resolution? Not an improvement per se. The picture would be sharper with better color fidelity, although the same resolution - and the progressive mode would get rid of some of the flickering that you get in the interlaced mode.

Yeah that's true. I do have quite alot of blurriness when using the ps3 browser. Most of everything is un-readable at times. Have to zoom in.

Thanks alot though. :)

EDIT

Erm...it's probably a...well.."stupid" question but is there an adapter or something that increases resolution on SDTV? (I ran alot of Linux distributions on my PC and figured them out easily but on PS3 it's like new to me for some reason.)

Yeah - you can get one of these. This will increase your resolution significantly:

Heh heh.... okay I was joking. No - unfortunately, there's no way to increase resolution on an SDTV. You get what you get.

In all seriousness, what I would try is getting the component cable for your PS3. Then - you can use the PS3's GameOS to safely try various modes. Since you don't have an instruction manual for your Sanyo - you really don't know what it can do. You might find that it supports 1080i, for example.

Actually, I do know it only does 480i/480p. I found the specs online:

I would do some careful research before buying an HDTV for use with PS3 Linux -- you don't want to end up being stuck with a model that won't display a full 720p image within the visible area, for example. Some TVs have modes called 'Dot by dot' or 'Just Scan' (or other names) that avoid any overscan issues, and others simply won't display a full 1280x720 image within the visible area. In that case you have to use one of the bordered modes or reduce the full screen resolution using fbset.

I tinyURL'd it for you.

Here's your manual, BTW:
http://www.sanyotv.com/DS24425%20(ESF)%200173A-.pdf

Reading thru the manual, it appears the set won't do 480p - the component jacks are for 480i only. Bummer.

Ok, so I'm back into the YDL scene. I just purchased this TV at my local Wal-Mart store:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... d=10929988

A good deal if I say so my self for a name brand. Now just gonna purchase a set of component cables which are $20-$25 dollars which is good, in my opinion.

I'd get HDMI cables but they are a bit pricey. Will get them later on down the road, sometime.
