How do you Manually installing Apps?

If you are new to YDL and have some more or less basic questions.

How do you Manually installing Apps?

Postby Spyhunter » 16 Jul 2009, 09:55

I know if has something to do with compiling it first maybe?

I'm talking about downloading the App from a site on a PC rather than using the Add/Remove tool in Linux?

Then being able to install via External HDD to Linux.

It depends how you download it, and how the site provides their code.

For Red Hat Linuxes, you have a number of choices. You can:
  1. Download the source code and compile it, then use the same source code to install it
  2. Download a pre-built RPM and install it
  3. Download a pre-built Debian .DEB package and convert it, then install it

Of all of these, #2 is the easiest. It's also the safest, since it registers the installation in the RPM database of all programs installed on your system. YUM uses this RPM database as well.

thanks that explains a lot.

i believe i was attempting to compile it but using a RPM makes life a lot easier.

Do you just double click on the RPM or do you need to use a command?

In YDL - either way. (man rpm if you want the command line syntax)

It depends how the RPM is configured. Linux doesn't have a designated place per se - applications can be run from any location.

That being said....

Linux does have a "tribal knowledge" location for many applications. See my post here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3084&p=11777#p11777

The applications don't have to go here - it's just where we put them anyway.

but how do you choose where to put them - i didn't get a location save dialog when installing SDLMAME from Add/Remove programs....

Also to add, when downloading Apps not from "Add/Remove" (<--- is there a name for this area), the RPM files - what version do I need to download as there are a few - eg: Linux ppc-64, ppc-32, x86?

You need to use ppc32 mostly. Sometimes particul application may need ppc64. And x86 is completely another arch. So install ppc32.

You don't choose. It's preset in the RPM.

Your PS3 has a Cell processor with a PowerPC core - what we call the "PPE". Linux runs primarily on this PPE. The Cell processor also contains 7 SPEs - of which 6 are available for use. However - applications must be specifically coded to use them - Linux won't use them by default.

So - as mentioned before, you want the RPMs that list either ppc, ppc32 or ppc64, since those are for PowerPC processors. If you have a choice between ppc32 or ppc64, try the 32 bit first. There are some advantages to 32 bit PowerPC applications in the 256 Meg memory footprint of a PS3.

The x86, i386, etc. RPMs are for Intel processors, and won't run on your PS3.
