One of the reasons folks prefer Gnome over KDE is due to the core graphics libraries they use. Remember - X Windows itself just draws to the screen. It doesn't know about window decorations, icons, scroll bars - all the bits of a UI we take for granted.

For a while, the open source community favored Gnome, since GTK was open source, and QT was closed source. Later on, QT went open source as well, and KDE fell back into favor.
