Mouse control via Joystick?

If you are new to YDL and have some more or less basic questions.

Mouse control via Joystick?

Postby Spyhunter » 23 Jul 2009, 09:14

Is there any utilities out there for Linux that allows me to use my PS3 Gamepad/Joystick to control the mouse cursor and even better an onscreen keyboard?

It probably won't work - but hey - give it a shot. You never know.

Others on the forum have reported success here:

(See how well the search works? :D)

I think that post references this post:

One of the reasons folks prefer Gnome over KDE is due to the core graphics libraries they use. Remember - X Windows itself just draws to the screen. It doesn't know about window decorations, icons, scroll bars - all the bits of a UI we take for granted.

Originally X Windows looked like this:

So - Gnome wrote something called GTK and KDE used an existing library called QT to get libraries of drawing functions. For a while, the open source community favored Gnome, since GTK was open source, and QT was closed source. Later on, QT went open source as well, and KDE fell back into favor.

You can read more about GTK here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTK%2B

Finally - as far as the on-screen keyboard, nobody I know has one working. Most folks, if they don't want to hook up a keyboard, use the optional PS3 controller gamepad keyboard.

This thing:

I think there's some posts about it on the forums.

Cheers,
Paul

P.S. Figured out a way to make search work a little better:

thanks. good news on the searching stuff.

so I can install and use a QT app regardless of whether i'm using Gnome, E17 or KDE?

I actually one of those controller keyboards as well (DOH!) and didn't think of using that - do I set it up like a normal BT controller.. like I did with my first PS3 SixAxis Controller - do I need to add anything to the config file though?

By default, Gnome/E17 doesn't include QT. You'd have to load it separately. Also - most QT applications require KDE. You can run some KDE applications in Gnome/E17 - but it loads most of KDE in the background for library support.

I don't know anything about the keypad setup - I don't have one to test with. :D As I said before - others on the forum have used it and posted about setting it up, etc.

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=5558&start=0&hilit=keypad
for example.
