why can't I install anything?!

If you are new to YDL and have some more or less basic questions.

why can't I install anything?!

Postby cosmo » 03 Aug 2009, 01:15

Everytime I use terminal to install something I get this:

[root@netgear ~]# yum install smpeg smpeg-devel
Loading "protectbase" plugin
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
PS3Bodega 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
base 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
fedora-extras 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00
updates 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
extras 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00
primary.xml.gz 100% |=========================| 854 kB 00:09
extras : ################################################## 2511/2511
Excluding Packages from Fedora Extras
Finished
^C

Exiting on user cancel
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root
[root@netgear ~]#

I waited about 20 mins before pressing CTRL + C to cancel .

It's the same with anything else I try to install so it must be something in my setup.

I've just tried going to Add/Remove but it says "Another application is running which is accessing software information" and then a box telling me it has stopped running unexpectedly.

Any pointers greatly appreciated!

We should start by troubleshooting your repos. What is the output of more /etc/yum.repos.d/* ? You will have to hit the spacebar a few times to print them all out.

Another thought

Are you running Gnome by any chance? If you - you should wait until Software Updater completes. It will lock the RPM database like you've described.

Gnome loads the Software Updater when it first starts.

More later - bedtime for me!

It's one of the two default desktops YDL uses.

If you haven't changed it, you're using Enlightenment - which doesn't have that issue.

You can change them from the "Session" menu at the login screen. Enlightenment and Gnome come loaded by default with YDL.

If it's not that, I wonder if there's something going on with yum-protectbase ... ? At the least it should take longer than normal since YDL 6.2 now includes 2,000+ packages in extras where YDL 6.1 had none. But it shouldn't take anything like 20 minutes ...

What I've been looking at is just using the default yellowdog repos and ps3bodega, no longer requiring fedora-extras. I have to add a number of packages before that will work 100% though. In that case, protectbase would no longer be needed.

would it be better ( and probably quicker) to just delete 6.2 and install 6.1 instead?
I mean, it seems that there is a lot more support for it on the web and with 6.2 being relatively new it could be a while before all the bugs are ironed out (for example the bluetooth)
