Confusion about the PS3 Bodega guides in relation to YDL 6.2

If you are new to YDL and have some more or less basic questions.

Confusion about the PS3 Bodega guides in relation to YDL 6.2

Postby Cyber Akuma » 13 Aug 2009, 07:00

I am fairly new to linux, but YDL isn't my first expirence with it. I have used Ubuntu and OpenSUSE, so I am familiar with reposotories, but YDL confused me.... I coulden't find any GUI based reposotory manager.

I tried installing kyum and yumx using the Add/Remove Software app, but kyum didn't show up in my menu (I am assuming this is a KDE app since it starts with K) and Yum Extender only showed what reposotories I had, didn't let me nanage them, it was essentially just a slower version of Add/Remove Packages, so I removed them both.

I am no stranger to a terminal/command prompt, but I AM new to linux and woulden't know my way around most apps using a terminal.

Most of the guides seem to have been written starting with YDL 5.X, and for the 6.X guides, apparently there were a lot of changes between 6.0 and 6.1. I have no idea if these are still relevant for 6.2.

I started with the emulation guide, then realised I should read to the repo guide first, then realized I should read the installing software guide first.

http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/bodeg ... ?f=6&t=117
http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/bodeg ... ?f=11&t=21
http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/bodeg ... p?f=11&t=9

But I don't know if the changes the software guide wants me to make to the extras repo will be valid for 6.2 or not, and there dosen't seem to be a 6.2 version of the Bodega repo.

I am completely lost, is there a 6.2 version of these guides and the Bodega repo? Is there any GUI version of these tools?

No - not really. 6.2 is only an incremental update from 6.1. Most of the 6.1 stuff still applies.

Remember - 6.2 only became public fairly recently - and that's the one most of us will use. Some folks will need to stick with 6.1 for the time being - there's some Bluetooth issues with 6.2. Others - like me - will upgrade to 6.2 when we have time - there's nothing pressing in there that I need, and it would damage my system to do an ill-thought out upgrade from 6.1 to 6.2.

As far as I know - unless billb states otherwise - the ps3bodega repo should work equally well in 6.2 as it does in 6.1. If there's too many issues, billb may have to create a separate 6.2 ps3bodega repo - he had to do this with the jump from 6.0 to 6.1.

We'll just have to see how the library dependencies work out. Stay tuned.

Cheers,
Paul

I see, thanks.

So that resolves the questions I had about adding the Bodega repo, can you tell me anything about the second link I posted? Namely, where it tells me to change the config file I have for my extras repo?

The current contents of the file and the data it wants me to paste are very different.

I'm not sure which extras you mean - there are two of them. :D

If you mean Fedora Extras, then yes - it should look like that.

However - yellowdog-extras you should leave alone - especially if you're running 6.2

Whatever comes as a default install of YDL 6.2

I saw three repos in my list (now 4 since I added Bodega): updates, extras... and I think the other was called base.

The file locations in the second link should make it clear which one I am talking about.

It was the step where it asked me to enter this text:

He's asking you to create a fifth - that's the confusion.

Remember this step?

2. Setup the fedora-extras repo if you haven't already:

On the terminal window, enter this command:
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo

That's you creating fedora-extras.repo from scratch.

Leave yellowdog-extras, yellowdog-base, & yellowdog-updates alone - except for adding protect=1.

Then you create fedora-extras and ps3bodega. Fedora-extras should have the text you see in that post.

Clear? :D

That file already exists when I run that gedit command though.

You probably created it during another step. Can you post its contents here?

Huh, maybe I mistook it for another file, I opened it to post the contents and it didn't exist.
