Music Server on Power Book G4

Hi
I have an old power book g4, and am think that with an addition of a decent usb external sound card and an external hard drive I could run a home music server using yellow dog?
Has anyone done this and does it work well ? if so which format would be best to store the music? and can i get track names without using itunes? (the thought of typing all track names from about 700 albums does not fill me with joy!
