does YDL have better media playing then PS3's OP?

If you are new to YDL and have some more or less basic questions.

does YDL have better media playing then PS3's OP?

Postby arminius » 05 Nov 2009, 18:25

I've got some .mp4's that won't play in ps3, won't even be recognised.
is YDL got a lot more media support and codecs?
and if one player won't play something can u download another player?

I mostly use my ps3 as a media player from my PC using mediatomb, is YDL good for playing movies from a media server?

I use mediatomb as well -- the GameOS is definitely a better choice for video playback using a media server than any PS3 Linux (since we don't have accelerated video).

ok, for example, PS3 can't play quicktime videos, YDL can't either?

I'd imagine you could find a plugin that would allow you to play quicktime videos on YDL -- yes -- as long as it wasn't anything above SD resolution (higher than around 720x480) because of the lack of HW accelerated video.

Still, I think you'd be better off setting up transcoding for quicktime videos in mediatomb and play on the GameOS.

Either by copying them to the PS3's hard disc (via web browser, memory card, USB thumb drive, etc.) or streaming them from a DLNA compliant server.

DLNA compliant servers include WMP 11, TVersity, etc.

More info about DLNA here:

and compatible players here:

Hello
I've got some .mp4's that won't play in ps3, won't even be recognised.
is YDL got a lot more media support and codecs?

Along with the above answers I would suggest installing mplayer (and mplayerplug-in) and ffmpeg yum should also install every codec needed to play any type of media out there.
I never got on with the mplayer gui (gmplayer) as far as I'm concerned it's broken, so uninstalled it, but mplayer will play absolutely anything :D
To get ydl to use mplayer as default right click on the file you want to play then open with > open with other application > use custom command, type mplayer and make sure "use as default for this kind of file" is ticked, you just need to double click on the file from now on.
and if one player won't play something can u download another player?

you can indeed, I like vlc and ffmpeg comes with it's own player ffplay
you can also invoke a media player from the command line like so
Code: Select all
mplayer ~/avi.videos/terminator-salvation.avi
note: to do this the file name must not have any spaces or apostrophes.
If you know the url of a website video you can stream it the same way i.e
Code: Select all
 mplayer http://www.gametrailers.com/download/58640/t_codmodernw2_launch.wmv
you can even watch some hd videos aswell using the command -framedrop
Code: Select all
 mplayer -framedrop http://www.gametrailers.com/download/58641/t_codmodernw2_launch_hd.wmv
if you watch the two vids you'll see the hd version has a terrible frame rate and the picture isn't that much sharper
There are two other alternatives, one already mentioned above, download the format the game player can play i.e wmv, avi or mp4 (h264 format) put on memory stick (game player will play hd no probs) or use ffmpeg to convert to a fore mentioned format (long and difficult process)
60Gb ps3 otheros awol. currently playing:bad company and farcry 2 again (seeing how far I can get using permadeath principle)update: regretfully Warren Clyde was involved in a shootout south of Pala and killed when he was hit by a land rover. RIP Warren

For video, I'd say GameOS is better, but for audio...Linux all the way.

For example, put a bunch of folders with mp3's in them in the MUSIC folder of an external storage device. Open up the external storage MUSIC folder in GameOS. Watch that external HD's light flash as the PS3 refreshes it's "database" or "catalog", which it will do every time you enter that MUSIC folder after a reboot. It doesn't cache that data. So if you have a lot of music, prepare to wait before you can really see everything on that external drive.

And oh yeah, Life with Playstation can't use music on external drives, neither can Pain. You also can't set up playlists involving external drives.

Linux on the PS3 also supports more audio formats like ogg and FLAC, if you use them.
