Gnash 0.8.7 and youtube.

If you are new to YDL and have some more or less basic questions.

Gnash 0.8.7 and youtube.

Postby roshi » 31 Mar 2010, 23:48

I am currently using Gnash 0.8.7 - I have been able to view 2 videos on youtube. This is much better than before (0). The configure requires many libraries which aren't difficult to install - just time consuming.

Anyone else have any luck?

The trick is the YouTube player behind the scenes. YouTube uses a number of different players - sometimes they're based on ActionScript (which should work with Gnash) and sometimes they're not.

The Gnash wiki has the best explanation:

Working streaming sites

The AS2 player and embedded players work, newer AVM2 player doesn't.

I'll still be using bazaar to keep up with the newest trunk. If anyone wants to install Gnash 0.8.7 -

http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/

or if you have Bazaar installed, use the following from a terminal.

bzr branch http://bzr.savannah.gnu.org/r/gnash/trunk

(i don't really care much for youtube) and you can quote me on that.

We've been building it for quite awhile. The PS3 seems to require custom build switches. Here's the results of my 0.8.7 build:

and some other historical posts:

Re: Gnash 0.8.7 and youtube. UPDATE / SUCCESSVILLE

Postby roshi » 05 Apr 2010, 23:54

OK. I have gnash 0.8.7 (02/2010) with firefox 3.0.14 on my Apple G5 Dual 2.0 Ghz with 2 GB of memory.

I have found that I can view most (more than even last week) youtube videos if I do one little thing before clicking on the link :

Ready??

Ready?

Wait for it!

I clear all private data (Tools / Clear Private Data). My settings are all checked (Edit / Preferences / Privacy / Private Data / Settings).

I have checked this several times with and without clearing the private data. I clear the data and it plays. Without clearing the data the same video will not play.

This marks a vast improvement over prior builds [that i have used without success]. I did notice that my processors are pushed towards 80-99% each while playing video. [ I have shared this with GNU project / Gnash ].

Anyone else have similar results? Let me know.
