How do I get flash videos to work on my powerbook g4?

Hello,
I am new to yellow dog linux.
I have a 12" powerbook g4 1.5 Ghz laptop and I have Yellowdog 6.2 installed.
I have not been able to watch flash videos online. I tried to get greasemonkey and vlc but when I use yum to download vlc, it says "nothing to do". So I have not been able to get vlc.
Of course gnash doesn't work at all even though I think I have the latest version.
Please, if anybody has experience with this issue would you help me out?
I am looking to learn more and I appreciate any assistance.

thanks,
Jose

Hi Jose,

Even though this is for the PS3, it's applicable to the G4 as well:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=7218

At least, it's a good starting place. :)

As for getting YUM to install VLC, if you haven't added any of the 3rd party repositories, it won't load. It's not included by default in the stock YDL repositories. :(

We do have a guide to configuring YDL to use 3rd party repositories here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3017

Again - although this is for the PS3 - it's applicable to the G4 as well.

Cheers,
Paul

Paul,
Thank you for your fast reply.
I went through the steps listed in the links you provided. And I was able to update the repos and get vlc installed.
Unfortunately, Youtube is still not working. I am using Greasemonkey and I have alternately tried using "youtube movies without flash" as well as "VLCtube". Neither one works. I even used the settings that you posted for "YMWF".
What happens is it says "loading" and then after about 5 seconds it says "idle".
Could you help me out?

Thanks,
Jose

Also,
I just tried downloading a video with download helper and vlc cannot play it back.
Neither will movie player.
It is an .mp4 file.
Is there something wrong with vlc?
Also, while I am in vlc, I am not able to access any preferences or playlist.
Just some more info...
Thanks
Jose

Last time I tried Greasemonkey and Youtube without Flash auto, both were broken after a recent change on Youtube. minitube works well for browsing/playing Youtube videos outside of the web browser -- you might try that. It's available for install from the "alternative" repo setup mentioned in the "Howto Install Software" guide in the PS3 forum, or you can just head straight to the guide for setting up PS3Bodega here:

Thanks,
minitube does work.
Now I am wondering how I can view videos posted on other sites besides youtube.
Some examples are Vimeo.com and tu.tv (mexican youtube).
Basically, how do I watch videos in different players?

Thanks for any help.

Jose

As billb noted, currently YouTube is broken with both of these Greasemonkey plugins. The behavior you've described is exactly how the current revision of the YouTube site fails. :(

Hopefully, for those of us who like to use these plugins, there will be some fixes soon. I believe that Greasemonkey will auto-update when they're ready.

As for other video sites that use Flash, there probably aren't many other resources available. Until there's an official Adobe Flash for PowerPC Linux, or a decent open source Flash alternative, this will continue to be problematic.

Cheers,
Paul
