Running a program

Postby andyc » 04 Apr 2005, 13:34

I'm trying to install and run my first program in linux.
I've installed YDL onto a mac iBook. Everything is up and running..

The software I want to install is called firstclass and the file name is
fcc-8.009-1-Linux.ppc.tar.bz2
It says its for Debian. Should that matter?

I've tar'ed the program using
su
cd /
tar xfj <path to bz2>/fcc-8.009-1-Linux.ppc.tar.bz2

the path for the program is correct
/opt/firstclass

i've chmod a+rx the fcc binary file

but when I goto to doubleclick the fcc file, nothing happens.

file fcc returns:
fcc: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, PowerPC or ciscl 4500, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.0, dymically linked (uses chared libs), not stripped

thanks

Why can I get firstclass to run under KDE but not gnome?

Anyone?

Thanks

One more try for help.

I guess i'm just an idiot or i'm not asking the right questions.

I have a file called: fcc-8.009-1-Linux.ppc.tar.bz2.
Its FirstClass Client 8.009 (Linux-PPC Debian) Beta .
The program is located here: http://www.tes.mi.it/forum/0000EE1B-800 ... -80000002/

I was able to get this program to install and run fine on my Apple iBook with kubuntu linux. (kubuntu is debian based)

Now I am trying to get it to install and run on my Apple iBook with Yellow Dog Linux installed.

I would like very much to have Yellow Dog on my ibook and not kbuntu.

I am a linux newbie. Do I need to compile/make/install the above tar.bz2 file so that it works with Yellow Dog?

Am I just out of luck because there is no "install" of firstclass for Yellow Dog?

I'm trying to learn here but am stuck. I think I know what i'm doing because I was able to get it to work under kubuntu.

Thanks for any help...

going for a make from source would probably be your best bet (you may not have some of its dependencies) also some distros place library files and other items in differnt places so it may not be finding them even if they are installed.

So give it a shot from sourcec and if it still fails- 1. you'll probably have better error messages (hint start the program w/ a -v tail and/or from a terminal so see any error messages)
Til our paths cross again
