USB Thumb Drive Not Recognized

Postby Don Ruff » 05 Aug 2004, 17:42

Computer

iBook G3, 2001, dual USB

YDL 3.0 and no other operating system.

Using Logitech trackball on USB. The iBook works perfectly with the initial install.

It does not recognize my USB thumb drive. Tried both ports.

The thumb drive is recognized on on two PCs running ML 9.0

I don't know where to start and I would appreciate any suggestions.

I have been running Linux on PCs for 4 years.

I hjave not forgotten about your request for either log or dmesg output to help me get the thumb drive recognized by my computer.

The modem seems to be the Apple equivalent of a Winmodem and doesn't work either without addtional effort and downloading of drivers.

The only way I have of getting information out of the iBook is to write it down and retype it. I can input data by writing it on CD.

I determined that the thumb drive is recognized in the Info Center. The mass storage seems to be loaded.

I will work on the modem and get the data requested.

I have named this computer "Helen Keller."

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I can access the thumbdrive in Superuser by typing

mount /deve/sda1 /mnt/thumbdrive

Then I can copy the files from the thumbdrive to a user account, manipulate them, and transfer them
back to the thumbdrive using Superuser.

This seems the hard way, but it works for now. I still want the thumbdrive to hotplug.

Any help would be appreciated.

did you try a mkdir /mnt/usbdrive [than] mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 [space] /mnt/usbdrive works on slackware with a msdos formatted usb drive.. as far as hot plug goes i'm not really sure which conf file needs to be modified... once again...

mkdir /mnt/usbdrive
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbdrive

As far as i know-the kernel has always had a few issues with hotplugging. Its why i learned to mount and unmount all my external drives and stuff manually. though you never did answer weather or not manually mounting and unmounting the drive still locked up your system. If it doesnt then you may just have to suffice with doing that until you install v4.0 and see if the new kernels have better support for it.

@Knight: Well in my own thread in this board conecrining this prob I did ;) If i just plug it in and out without mounting it or anything it crashes. If i'm mount it and unmount it afterwords it stillt crashes.
So you're right advising me to wait for ydl 4.0, maybe the pcmcia support for my wireless card is working than as well :-\
