YDL 5.0 is based on Fedora. YDL 6.0 is based on RedHat Enterprise Linux (via CentOS). I can imagine that upgrading between these different distributions would be very hard. I think it's probably a good idea that the YDL 6.0 installer forces a reinstall instead of an upgrade - it should prevent a lot of issues in the long run.
I think you can save your personal data if your /home directory is on a different partition. If you have only one partition for the entire install, then you'll have to follow billb's steps.
(I should really test out this /home directory theory. I will when I set up YDL 6.0. At this point, I'm waiting for my PS3-to-VGA cable before I start the setup.
