HP printer and lsusb

Postby dogdaynoon » 11 Aug 2008, 06:29

Hi there,
I was currently using YDL 6.0 but switched to ubuntu about 4-5 months ago. (sorry I am an a@* )

I am having pretty good results with it though. However the PSUbuntu forums are especially dead at times. So if you could help me I would be much
obliged.

I am trying to install an HP psc 1315v all-in-one printer. I have installed drivers from here: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/downloads.html .
That seemed to run smoothly enough.
I know the printer and cable are in working order. I have hooked them up on a mac book and a windows system.

When I use command $ lsusb
I get no results. ZERO, not my keyboard, mouse or printer. Looks like this:
Code: Select all
dogdaynoon@dogdaynoon:~$ lsusb
 dogdaynoon@dogdaynoon:~$

OK so I tried this:
Code: Select all
sudo dmesg | grep usb

This results in this:
Code: Select all
dogdaynoon@dogdaynoon:~$ sudo dmesg | grep usb
[sudo] password for dogdaynoon:
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs

I think printer should be in 3-2.3: slot . I dunno ^--^.

OK, to install the printer we do this
Code: Select all
sudo hp-setup
This starts the gui to check for printers.
But you guessed it
PRINTER NOT FOUND

Nothing is found acctually.

So what do you suppose is going on?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
BO

I have the exact same printer in the living room hooked up to the laptop. I'll try to get around to testing it myself over the next couple of days.

Right now the only thing I can think of for you to try is to try installing the printer via the system-config-printer tool, because if I remember correctly the hplip drivers are normally accessed via CUPS, and that you only need to use HPLIP directly via the HPLIP daemon if you want some of the advanced functionality.

Hey,
I tried to install from the system admin menu but had no luck.
Do you know why lsusb is not detecting my usb hardware?
I have searched for config files for lsusb but haven't been able to find any.

Here is a link to a screen shot of what I get when I search for printers.

I am positive the printer is in working order.
Thanks

I really hate saying this:

Basic printing functionality "works for me".

I plugged it in, used the system-config-printer tool, chose it in the menu, chose it's driver model (1310) and basic printing functionality works. Try using hp-setup as well, if you have the hplip daemon running, that also worked. I tried scanning using hp-tools and xsane, but that didn't work for me (device was busy) Here is how it showed up via lsusb for me:

Do we consider this a win for YDL against Ubuntu then?

Seriously, though - is there any way to try CronoCloud's method in Ubuntu? I fully admit that I know next to nothing about Ubuntu linux. :D

Not quite yet.

I switched to ubuntu because I was able to get the support that I was going to need locally...
I have been able to get vlc, bluefish, streaming radio, ninjavideo.net access, apache2, php, mysql, phpmyadmin,
cups, gFTP, pidgin IM, WIFI RADAR, Bluetooth support and reboot back to PS3 XMB all working. I have yet to try to get any emulators running but that will come.
I did have a huge problem with the 2.40 system update and had to reinstall ubuntu. And I will say that this sucked ALOT!!
I will admit that Psubuntu forum pretty much sucks. :x
Over all I am having decent results with Ubuntu.
I dont know that I worked with YDL long enough for a fair comparrison.
YDL forums run circles around Psubuntu's. But I also can get a little support from the Ubuntu forums as well and those are quite a bit busier than YDL's.

Now as far as crono method goes, I will try it and see what happens.

I was able to get lsusb working. The fstab file wasn't configured to mount the usb bus on start-up. Now it is and this is what I added in case anyone else has this problem.

Code: Select all
none    proc/bus/usb    usbfs     defaults      0        0

And as far as the printer goes in lsusb I get the same output as you do Crono.

Also Crono, Which PPD file did you choose when you were setting up the printer? I have 2 choices, 1 recommended and 1 other that looks the same but with lowercase "psc" in its name.

Thanks guys,
BO

EDIT " AND i got java working in firefox wich appears to be no small feat. "
Does YDL have flash? because this would be a huge gain over ubuntu. From what I understand though, flash isn't written for ppc computers yet....
EDIT: Had to change in fstab file lisusb to usbfs so now it looks like this
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0

It's not that big a feat - we've had that working in YDL for ages! ;)

We've even got it working in Opera...

As for Flash - that's neither Ubuntu or YDL dependent. That's up to Adobe to create a PPC Linux version. :)
