Lazy Linux: 10 Essential Tricks for Admins

Postby ppietro » 12 Aug 2008, 22:04

Hi everyone,

Whether you know it or not, if you've installed YDL, you're an admin. :D

I found this list of tips on the IBM Developer Works board - this is good stuff to know. Not all of the commands may work on YDL, but still - this is good reference material.

This doesn't mean I have to grow a beard, pontificate on the virtues of GNU screen, and play nethack with vi-keys instead of numpad, do I? Nooooooo.

Most of it should work.

cat /proc/cpuinfo is fun! use it to show you're running Linux on a PS2/PS3 on IRC.

IBM's got tons of Linux info and you can get the articles in PDF too. Here's another good page:

If you'd have told me 20 years ago that I'd be saying nice things about ol Big Blue, I wouldn't have believed you.
