Geany Editor

Postby Taellik » 24 Mar 2009, 11:48

Anyone have any experience ( good / bad ) using this programming source code editor on YDL ?

http://www.geany.org/

Been noticing Eclipse is not as robust on the PS3 under YDL, the plugin manager for Eclipse doesn't work. It's not a bad implementation, just not as powerful on PS3 as on a Winblows box so looking at alternatives. Eric seems to be doing fine for a Python editor, so now I'm looking at alternatives for Eclipse for doing C/C++ , Java, and Lua programming on the PS3.

HTML /Javascript / PHP are not so demanding to code so they can be done in probably any editor that supports the other languages.

<joke> what's wrong with vim or emacs....in a terminal.</joke>

I've not tried that one. You might also have a look at Scite or Bluefish.

Geany seems to have a better comprehensive suite of things a developer uses than the ones you suggested, Crono.

Plus, I have a Barbara Eden "Jeanine" icon that would be great replacement to use and be politically correct for my PS3 / YDL desktop ! :D

On YDL, I use joe over ssh to do my coding. But I use Geany when coding directly on my laptop. I haven't tried many other editors to compare it to but Geany is very nice. It is lighter than a full fledged IDE (but of course doesn't have all of the features), Geany has syntax highlighting for many languages (C/C++, Java, HTML, CSS, and many others), and Geany has all of the standard text editor features. The thing I love the most about Geany is that it has a built-in terminal. I find this very useful to test my programs as I am writing them without having to switch to another window.

As I said, I have not used Geany on YDL, but in general I recommend Geany for coding.
