Festival text to speech.

Postby CronoCloud » 04 Apr 2009, 16:59

Here's a good Ubuntu oriented thread on adding new voices to the text to speech system, Festival.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=751169

Though there's no need to install festival from source since the version in the repos is 1.95, recent enough to install the voices.

The mbrola binary zip linked to in the HOWTO has a ppc linux binary which you can just copy to to /usr/local/bin as mbrola and then install the voices as described.

You'll want your .festivalrc to have the following lines in it so it uses alsa:

Code: Select all
(Parameter.set 'Audio_Command "aplay -q -c 1 -t raw -f s16 -r $SR $FILE")
(Parameter.set 'Audio_Method 'Audio_Command)

Have it read man pages:

Code: Select all
man ps3-boot-game-os | col -b | festival --tts

It even says the following line correctly, or at least one of the nitech voices does.

Ron Rogers Jr. (CronoCloud)
CECHE01 PS3 (MGS4 80GB Bundle) without OtherOS and with an upgraded 320GB HD
Running Fedora 23 on a Compaq Presario CQ5320F upgraded with a Phenom X4 and GT640
