How do I get a game going on DOSBox?

Postby RuusOrdo » 08 Apr 2009, 06:34

I got The Oregon Trail all ready, but do not know where I should put the files and how exactly I access them through DOSBox to play the game.

Any help?

I put my dosbox games n stuff in a directory, I use one called dosbox_c_drive in /usr/share. I can then run dosbox with the following command line and it will mount that directory as dosbox's C drive:

Code: Select all
dosbox -fullscreen -c "MOUNT C /usr/share/dosbox_c_drive"

Then once the dosbox window comes up (in fullscreen with that option) I can run the application as I would have in DOS

Wouldn't you run into file permission issues having the games installed in /usr/share? In other words, the games wouldn't be able to create / update save files.

Depends on the permissions. "CronoCloud" owns that directory and thusly when I run dosbox, it can read and write to it. I put it there to try to keep my /home uncluttered, that's pretty much the only reason it's there. You can put a dosbox stuff directory practically anywhere, as long as the permissions are right. It's actually pretty big, I've got a full Fallout 1 install in there that I'm trying to figure out how to get it to run better. I'm pretty darned quirky Linux wise.

I know it depends on the permissions, but by default a regular user wouldn't be able to write to that directory and the original poster might not be familiar with changing permissions/owners. Just wanted to point that out to the OP and hopefully avoid any confusion.

Alright. I got the game I am trying to play (Oregon Trail 1.2 I believe) in a DOS directory, and it mounts to C: just fine. Now my problem is whenever I try to run the executable files(there are two different ones in two different folders, OTWIN OTWIN32, called OREGON.EXE and OREGON32.EXE) and it will not run. Maybe I didn't get the files. I got it from *******, and it has install folders WIN16 and WIN32. If this is not the right kind of download for Oregon Trail for use with DOSbox, can someone point one out for me?

EDIT

Nevermind. the Oregon Trail I had wasn't for use with DOSBox. I got Alone in the Dark 1 to work.

Right -- that's obviously a Windows version. And no, we can't openly discuss where to download such things.

There's a nice wikipedia article listing commercial games that have been released free of charge:

A good number of those work in DOSBox on the PS3.

Thanks for all your help. I found a nice website with tons of good games, too.
