YDL-On-A-Stick

Postby quantumfuzz » 05 Oct 2009, 23:24

I read with interest about the release of "YDL-On-A-Stick" as a boot-from-usb solution for PS3 linux. Now I am ready to purchase the stick, but cannot find a trace of the product or the announcement on either YDL.net or the Fixstars site. Does anyone know what happened?

Thanks,
qf

You can find the product announcement in the Annouce mailing list archive here:

However, I don't believe there have been any official announcements from Fixstars about what has happened. If you go back to November 2008, you'll see Fixstars aquired Terra Soft Solutions:

http://lists.fixstars.com/pipermail/yel ... 00192.html

But since then, Sony released the PS3 "Slim" with no support for installing another OS such as YDL, and indicated this would be the case for all future models. Obviously, without a supply of new PS3s that can have Linux installed on them, this would have an effect on their product lineup.

Not long after that, Fixstars' store (where the PS3s with YDL pre-installed, the bootable USB drives, etc., were sold) went "down for maintenance." Later, the support info that was on us.fixstars.com moved to http://www.ydl.net, and us.fixstars.com now points to http://www.fixstars.com.

So I'm not sure if that product is still available or not ... best thing to do would be to contact them and see:

You should be able to recreate basically the same thing on your own by installing YDL 6.2 to a USB drive, but I haven't attempted it myself.
PS3 60GB [CECHA01], FW 3.15, YDL 6.2, Samsung T260HD @ 1920x1200
Powermac G4 1.25 GHz x2, 2 GB RAM, YDL 6.2

Yeah, I've emailed them twice through their contact/inquiries page and have yet to receive a reply. Kind of frustrating. I'd like to try YDL, but I want it on a bootable stick so I don't have to partition the drive. Sigh.
