change ps3-video-mode post install

Postby chemebabak » 06 Feb 2010, 08:07

Hello,
i just put yellow dog 6.2 on my ps3 system. Install went fine. I installed it on a hdtv to install_ps3_1080i. When I try to change video mode using any of the following commands in the terminal window:
ps3-video-mode -m 4 -f [for full screen 1080i]
ps3-video-mode -m 132 [for full screen 1080i]
ps3-video-mode -m 3 [for 720p]
ps3-video-mode -m 5 [for 1080p]
the screen turns black with white lines across.

How do I change video modes post-install?
I do not want to edit my yaboot file until I am certain that my monitor will support the other video modes. Can anyone help me with this?

You can't run ps3-video-mode in a terminal window from a graphic mode (i.e. X Windows). Instead, you must run it from a text login. You can switch to a text login terminal by typing Ctrl-Alt-F1.

You can switch to a text login terminal by typing Ctrl-Alt-F1.

I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 at login, kboot and in my graphical environment. I also have tried to use the session Terminal Window instead of Gnome or Enlightenment.

What should I do?

If I understand correctly, you installed with 1080i. Assuming that it works correcty, boot normally and get to your graphical login.

At this login, type Ctrl-Alt-F1.

Your graphic mode should exit, and a text login should appear.

At this point, just login normally.

If that's not what's happening - please describe as much as possible what is happening. This generally works for us.

Hello ppietro,

I tried ctrl-alt-F1 at the login and that did not work. I logged in and marked ctrl-alt-F1 during the loading of Gnome and that took me to the text login. Great! Now I can get to the text login from the login screen. It is as if I unlocked the text mode.

Now I have two follow up questions:

1. How do I return to the graphical environment from the text login?
2. Is there a compiled list of commands to use at kboot:?

Thanks

Alt-F7. However - if you use the ps3-video-mode command, this will corrupt your graphics display and you must reboot instead. ps3-video-mode is only used to test video modes - you need to update your /etc/yaboot.conf file and/or reboot afterwards.

As billb said, see here:

In this case, no. By editing the /etc/yaboot.conf file, you create them.

I have multiple entries set up in /etc/yaboot.conf, and they show up in kboot:

Once you feel pretty comfortable editing /etc/yaboot.conf, you can try the tips listed here:
