4.1 repo?

Postby ChristTrekker » 15 Mar 2010, 23:12

Are there any 4.1 repos still online?

Hi

All previous releases of Yellow Dog and Champion Server are available here from Champion Server 1.2 all the way through to YDL 6.

http://ftp.caliu.cat/pub1/distribucions ... /releases/

You can modify your repos to point to here instead.

I have YDL 4.1 running on an iBook G4 pointing to these repos - I will double check that it still works and post my *.repo files.

All the best

One good reason the link provided above by Pat, failed is that the directory tree which was provided doesn't include any information for yum to process. Yum needs to see instructions it understands in order to function; the directory tree Pat provided goes up to /releases which exists at the same directory level where /yum exists. The better link to share on this list instead is here: http://ftp.caliu.cat/pub1/distribucions/yellowdog/yum/

The directory tree I provided will allow whomever is looking to access the repositories via yum through this server to decide for themselves which version of YDL they want yum to see; they must also note that only YDL 3 -6.0 are available. Anyone looking to modify their yum to access one of these versions of YDL must remember the following example:

  • Note that this link allows you to decide which version of YDL you want yum to use. When you click upon the link you will see that only YDL 3 -6.0 are available.
  • Once you've decided which version of YDL you need you must do the following:

    Click upon the version of YDL which interests you and copy the URL leading there into your yum program. The example I use below is for YDL 4.1 (and should work for YDL 4.1 - 6.0):

    Within YDL go to /etc/yum.repos.d and create a file (within the yum.repos.d directory) with the following name: caliu.repo. The period after "o" is not necessary in the file's name. The file is to have within it the following information:

    Code: Select all
    [Caliu]
    name=Caliu repo for Yellow Dog 4.1
    baseurl=http://ftp.caliu.cat/pub1/distribucions/yellowdog/yum/4.1/
    gpgcheck=0
    enabled=1

After the above is complete then yum should see what is available for YDL 4.1 from the caliu server. Remember don't mix YDL releases (don't mix YDL 3.0 with YDL 4.1 etc.), doing so will create an unstable and unreliable YDL installation as each successive release contains a great many revisions and differences between them. It is best to stay within one release. Therefore users of YDL 4.1 have no need for anything earlier; if however a YDL 4.1 user wants to move to YDL 5 or YDL 6 or higher the best approach is a full and complete installation starting afresh from that higher version of YDL. Likewise once one moves up to YDL 6.1 or 6.2 there is no need for anything earlier.

Of course, not everyone with older Apple or other computers will be able to make such transitions to higher versions of YDL because the hardware they may own is unsupported by that higher version.

One other point, acquiring the iso (between YDL 2.0 - 6.0) from the caliu server is done from here: http://ftp.caliu.cat/pub1/distribucions/yellowdog/iso/

Be sure to read and use the MD5SUM and SHA1SUM values (as well as the respective HOW TOs for each test) so that you can compare the correct value against the value of the iso you finally download. This will save you a lot of burning time. Also make sure that you have DSL or faster internet access as downloading these iso huge iso files can eat valuable time.
