YDL 6 on G5 Quad: 100% Power, 0% GUI

I finally got around to installing YDL 6 on the G5 Quad. I wasn't able to install using the GUI, so I install-texted my way through it and made it a point to Xautoconfig once I was up and running.

Sure enough startx didn't do much, so I Xautoconfiged. Nothing. Xautoconfig --safe didn't do it either, so I tweaked /etc/X11/xorg.conf to display in 16 bit. Then 15 bit. Then 8 bit. Then using VGA. Then I gave up and dropped back into OS X.

How do I get X to play nice with a GeForce 6600?

Linux Driver Hell (A Video-Board Haiku)

Many moons ago,
puzzlement was posted here.
Status: no replies.

GeForce board,
two monitor ports,
single monitor.

Both DVIs work,
but NVidia can't tell
which one's connected.

Video that worked
was not the video sought.
(TUI alone sucks)

The one I thought was,
was not; the port, mislabeled.
Why should this be? [shrug]

startx will run if
you've plugged into the right port;
left, console only.

Here, bad programming:
OS X does not mind which
port is used - just plug.

Yellow Dog user:
Now you know. File it under
"Linux driver hell".

(Troubleshooting in
seventeen syllables ain't
no square coders' job.)

Neo,
Mate, good job on that one. I am just about to pick up a dual G5 2.0Ghz powermac with a Geforce 5600 in it. Nice to know about the driver hell. Your efforts have not been in vain.

/salutes

cheers,
PG
