powerbook g4 screen brightness issues

anyone got any ideas about how to make the screen brighter?
everything else seems to work, but its so dark i cant see the screen properly, and when trying to use the shell ctrl+alt+fn+f* its nigh on black.
so any ideas? im running 4.1 on a G4
