Can't find Airport Extreme version

Postby PhineGarden » 27 Jan 2011, 17:56

Hello,

New to YDL. Just installed 6.2 on a PowerBook G4 Aluminum. Have been following the Fixstars howto for enabling airport extreme, but can't find the wireless controller? Maybe it's not a Broadcom??

[root@localhost ~]# cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
[root@localhost network-scripts]# lspci | grep -i broadcom

Hi PhineGarden!

I've forgotten installation and setup details unique to YDL 6.2; but first things first, please refer here carefully. You'll notice that your work to date approximately matches Step 2. I say approximately because you may have omitted installing the Development Tools via yum, if so try using yum to install the recommended software. It is after the installation of the Development Tools which includes many other nonstandard packages (not part of the normal YDL installation procedure) which specifically allow Apple hardware to be seen and used from within YDL.

After those missing packages are installed try running the lscpi command just as you did previously and you should find then that your output will match what is reported as the correct output for Step 2.
If you don't find this to be so, and you further explore the links referring to determining whether you have earlier versions of Airport Extreme and still don't find Airport Extreme output then you must conclude that Airport Extreme was not installed on that computer.

An annoying possibility but it would be unfair to you to ignore that potential disappointment if that is in fact your reality. Better to check and make sure however that one goes the "extra mile" to determine exactly what is actually installed on your computer. Having owned Apple products for years and developed long lasting relationships with reliable Apple third-party service vendors there is nothing like Apple products however these older Apple products are very much harder to determine the functionality or reliability of these aging parts all these years later. The best method of determination of what you actually have installed oddly as it sounds is to use YDL to discover exactly what standard Apple provided software glosses over insufficiently. The other means of examining Apple hardware is to select within OS X the Apple menu and then select About this Mac. A table along the left will open and select Network; then look to see if Airport Extreme is installed.

If OS X sees Airport Extreme (not just Airport, Airport and Airport Extreme are different wifi cards Extreme being the superior version) but YDL does not -- you may just have to install the tools I recommended earlier before you can fully exploit Airport Extreme within YDL.

Another option in the event you don't have OS X installed was provided elsewhere in this YDL Board here.
All the best....
