Unable to install 4.0.1 on 1.8Ghz 17" iMac G5

Hello there,

I have already partitioned my HD as instructed in any of the guides; I have also installed OS X on the proper partition. When I go to install the linux at the prompt I type:

install-g5

I then see all sort of text scroll up the screen and then I see that the system is loading all the devices. A couple of seconds after I see Tux at the top, the whole thing stops and this is what I could manage to copy down while it was frozen:

mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice
i2c /dev entries driver
Oops: Kernel access of bad area, sig:11 [#1]

<0>Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
<0>Rebooting in 180 seconds

Afer this screen sits for a minute I then hear my CPU fans turn on (and it sounds like a jet engine!) for a minute and then reboot.

I purchased these discs directly from the Yellow Dog store so I doubt there is any problem with them; they worked fine on my mac mini last summer. BTW my iMac is of the last generation before they included the iSight in the monitor.

If it helps to ring a bell with anybody it seems like the problem has something to do with some

Keywest I2C thing that is associated with /dev

Any help appreciated
thanks
