G3, NETWORK PROBLEM

Power Mac G3, with G4 upgrade to 533
9.1GB seriel drive
40 GB IDE x 2
CD-Rom
all the standard jazz.
my issue is I installed YDL and i can't get networking to work. same as before network lights appear on router saying a connetion is made. it sais the network device `GMAC (Sun GEM)` is not detected. I dont know what chipset i have on this computer for networking or where to look to find out.
Please help me find an answer and guide me to a working Linux OS on my mac.
