PB Wallstreet

Postby Spence » 30 Nov 2004, 17:23

My first experience with linux has been on a PB Wallstreet with the following specs:

YDL 3.0.1
233 Mhz
96 MB Ram
10 GB HD

This originally had the 2 GB Harddrive, but after trying YDL for a while, I liked the speed that it gave to the PB so I upgraded to a 10 GB HD so that I could actually do work on it. Now I run smaller financial simulations and non-linear optimizations on it and it doesn't do too badly (of course big projects get done on something else.) It's amazing how the correct tools (i.e. having linux instead of the enjoyable but nearly useless Mac OS 9) can resurrect an otherwise outdated machine.

PowerBook G3 "Wallstreet"
300 mhz- 192mg of RAM
running YDL 3.0.1 and Mac OS 9.1
20 gig HD
Bad hinges (typical wallstreet flaw)
runs beautifully, I use it as a jukebox

PowerMac 5500/250 (oh yeah)
90 mgs of RAM
Was running YDL 2.0 and Mac OS 9.0
20 gig HD

PowerMac 5500/225 (even better)
32 mgs of RAM
Was running Debian, has occasionally had YDL 2.0 on it, and Mac OS 9.0
has varied between a 2 gig HD to a 10 gig.

PowerMac 5500/250
YDL 3.0.1
250 Mhz
96 MB Ram
10 GB HD (ex Sawtooth)

Now if I can get 4.0 in there...

I currently have a Twentieth anniversary mac
80 gig hd
128 Ram
G3 400mhz/1mb cache
usb/firewire pci card

I was running YLD 4.0 pretty well except all the sound, outside of wav files, was all garbeled. I installed YLD 4.1 and at the momment can't even boot.

I just got YDL 4.1 in the mail (witha blue T-Shirt!!). I plan on installing it on all my G3's. The beige G3 might give me trouble as I think 4.1 doesn't support the bootloader or something like that...
