Architecture specific questions.

Imac g3 500mhz
1 gig sdram
hd 40gig
yellow dog 4.0
************************************************************
did an intall perfect....
but one problem.......
it ask for username and password...
at installation it did ask for password, but not username.......
so after installation it does ask for username before password....
so i cant login????
is this software free to go in linux ??
do i need to do a special thing to make it work??

try username "root" and when it asks for password type in the one you entered during the install. You dont create users anymore during install you have to do it after you get the system up

this is the cli, (command line interface) what install option did you put on your machine? Try typing "startx" and if it has an error/fails to start try typing "Xautoconfig" the startx again

install safe

all software available (server, personnal desktop etc...).

ill be back.........ill try your startx and xautoconfig


p.s: there is no login window......its a black background + whriting in white.
it says yellow dog, the hour, login and then password

there will be no login window w/o the X server. The X server is the gui for linxu. the cli is the underlying interface Also make sure that "Xautoconfig" is exactly like that as linux is a case-sensitive OS

did u try running the X config program ("Xautoconfig")?

i did !?!:
startx and after all the whriting it came back to = root@local host root
then i did put Xautoconfig.
and press enter.
it came back to = root@local host root...

Sorry about all this......it seem hard to get in linux wen you dont know what your doing :oops:

Btw...i reformated...what kind of install would you suggest...its for personnal use.....i got my internet account(on dsl,ethernet), firewire extern hd, usb printer, extern sound system, firewire cd drive x 2, firewire dvd drive x 1, firewire web cam..

well if your going to reinstall id suggest just starting w/ using the desktop install. Also as this progresses im thinking that in the end ill end up teaching you how to edit config files (which is good - but a little scary) on the same note howcome you use the install safe option? just use install (just let it sit - itll default to this after a little bit)

if i type just install or just press enter..
anachonda stops the installation...makes a error report and want s to restart..(about no monitor found and lots of bla bla...

this morning i did a install text + workstation type...
looks good for now.(the instalation).

ill come back and tell you if it still does the same thing at login! :?

failed to do a startx.........something about x 86, cant load x server, and cant find screen.

and i did xautoconfig just for the fun of it...it came back to root @root

hmm.....im guessing that the X server config file isnt right - can someone post or link to their X config file for this type of machine
