I think I found a pretty important clue. I was doing a bit more searching, and found this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1107066
They indicate that, for whatever reason, the Mac OpenFirmware sometimes loses track of exactly which device the CD really lives on. My TiBook seems to suffer from this fault; here's the "devalias" output:
Code: Select all
hd                  /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@0
cd                  /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-3@20000/disk@0
zip                 /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-3@20000/disk@1
ide0                /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-3@20000/disk@0
ide1                /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-3@20000/disk@1
ultra0              /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@0
ultra1              /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@1

Note that "cd" points at "disk@0", while "ide1" (and "zip") point at disk@1. Sure enough, there's an issue:
Code: Select all
   0 > dir cd:\  can't OPEN the DIR device
    ok
   0 > dir ide1:\

    ok

(Yes, I know this is the Fedora 11 PPC DVD and not YDL 6.x, but I think that this might have something to do with the core problem seen on YDL as well.)

I'm going to try to boot off the "ide1" alias, to see if I get any further. I guess that the other option is to try to make a permanent change to the "cd" drive alias, as this machine certainly doesn't have a zip drive installed in it...

Hope this helps,
t.

I finally got Linux installed on my TiBook; it seems that there are some issues with device aliases in the Open Firmware.

I've written up my experience here: http://tkil.livejournal.com/53177.html

(I ended up installing Fedora 11, since that's the distro I know best, but since the Fedora boot sequence failed in exactly the same way as YDL, I'm guessing that the core issue is the same.)

Thanks for the help, anyway!

don't boot in my PBG4 help!

[MODERATOR EDIT: Sorry - we don't allow double posting of topics in our forums. I merged this with the original for you. -Paul]

hi there
just met the problem of booting in YDL 6.2 with my PBG4. the problem is exactly same as the topic of the "YDL 6.2 DVD don't boot in my PBG4 (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6714)" in the forum. However, it seems that the problem hasn't been solved. The downloaded .iso is confirmed with no problem. Does any one tell me what should I do for this? I cannot even get into the installation interface!

(Note: I'm a PS3 owner - so take this with whatever grain of salt you wish)

There appears to be a bug in the Open Firmware with this model that loses track of the optical drive, preventing booting.

A couple of posts up, a user suggested a workaround:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6714&p=41588#p34873

That's about all I know. Any Mac owners want to chime in?

Cheers,
Paul
