Sharing a keyboard and mouse between computers

Introduction
If you are like me, and sometimes operate 2 or more computers side by side, you often get confused about which mouse to reach for, or type a command on the wrong console. I recently found a nice tool to eliminate this problem... and it's pretty handy for confusing my friends too.

Synergy is a free program that allows you to share a keyboard and mouse between computers on a network. You set up the server (the one with the keyboard/mouse) to know which computers are left/right/above/below each other, and set the rest to connect to the server. Then moving your mouse to the left of the server's screen will magically pop it over to the computer to the left of the server.

Procedure
  1. Download the synergy RPM here (YDL RPM) or at the Synergy website for other platforms.
  2. Install it on the server and clients.
    Yellow Dog: rpm -ivh synergy-1.2.2-ydl.1.ppc.rpm
  3. Set up a config script on the server. (See the Synergy Documentation page for details)
  4. Run the synergy server on the computer with keyboard and mouse:
    synergys --config <config file>
  5. Run the synergy client on all the other machines you want to control:
    synergyc <server's IP or address>

Example server config file can be found: here
