TOPIC: How to download and install IBM's JRE (Java Runtime Environment)

Introduction
IBM provides the most recent JRE/JDK available for Power Linux. To download it, you must create a (free) account on their website.

1. Install an older C++ library:
   1. From the YDL Menu --> Applications --> System Tools --> Software Management --> Add/Remove Programs
      
      
   2. Select "Base System", check "Legacy Software Support", and then "Apply".
      
      
   3. When the pop-up window "Package Selections" is active, select "Continue".
      
      
   4. When complete, select "Ok".
   
   
2. Point your browser to: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux/download.html, register, and sign in.
   
   
3. Select "Download using http."
   
   
4. Under the "JRE" menu, download the "rpm format" RPM with the option to open with "system-install-packages" (same as the application "Add/Remove Software").
   
   
5. Enter your root passwd when prompted.
   
   
6. The RPM will now install.
   
   
7. This does NOT include a web browser Java plugin.

You should now be able to use 'java' to run JAVA apps.
